We call these particular types Auto-WLANs. Latency for direct communication between neighbouring vehicles is very low in these. However, it takes more time to transfer information over a longer distance due to the short-range nature of the wireless technology used, which requires the forwarding of messages by intermediate nodes. In ad-hoc networks with few vehicles, it may not even be possible to forward messages over longer distances. Compared to WLAN Systems, Auto-WLAN systems have a slightly higher transmission range, in which the communicating entities may organise themselves in an ad-hoc fashion.

In this section, we will map the different communication systems with respect to their suitability for the different AutoNet applications as well as for the different communicating entities participating in the respective AutoNet scenarios.
