Degradation usually refers to the breakdown of the original molecule by the loss of the various component parts or by the fragmentation of the molecule into smaller substances. Transformation and degradation processes may occur through interactions with other chemicals in the environment. This can be facilitated by the input of energy in the form of radiation or heat. Alternatively, biota may be involved, leading to the transformation and degradation of compounds through biological processes.
