In the essay, Steinbeck recounts nervously showing his friend the typescript of Cannery Row and offering to make any changes that he suggested. “Let it go that way,” Ricketts replied. “It is written in kindness. ” SYNOPSIS Steinbeck begins “About Ed Ricketts” by writing of the accident that ended his friend’s life in April 1948 at the age of 52. Ricketts was fatally injured when his car collided with the Del Monte Express train at a railroad crossing in MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA. Rescuers managed to pull the man, mangled but alive, from the wreck.

The essay relates in detail Ed Ricketts’s military service during the two world wars, noting that although he was a remarkably unmilitary man he managed to be particularly successful in his unlikely career, first as a company clerk and subsequently in the venereal disease section of the Monterey induction center. A section of the essay is also devoted to Ricketts’s love of alcohol, an affection he shared with the author, as well as his “passionate and profound” interest in music and reading.
